چکیده

Introduction Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has emerged as a promising noninvasive imaging modality for the serial assessment of vessel wall thickness in the carotid artery as an early marker of atherosclerosis. For clinical application of this technique, Scan-Rescan reproducibility is paramount. Currently, a multicontrast protocol, including a combination of MR-weightings is used as reference standard for quantitative and morphologic measurements.

An Objective Method to Optimize the MR Sequence Set for Plaque Classification in Carotid Vessel Wall Images Using Automated Image Segmentation

A typical MR imaging protocol to study the status of atherosclerosis in the carotid artery consists of the application of multiple MR sequences. Since scanner time is limited, a balance has to be reached between the duration of the applied MR protocol and the quantity and quality of the resulting images which are needed to assess the disease. In this study an objective method to optimize the MR...

Automated registration of multispectral MR vessel wall images of the carotid artery.

PURPOSE Atherosclerosis is the primary cause of heart disease and stroke. The detailed assessment of atherosclerosis of the carotid artery requires high resolution imaging of the vessel wall using multiple MR sequences with different contrast weightings. These images allow manual or automated classification of plaque components inside the vessel wall. Automated classification requires all seque...

3D T1 and T2 mapping of the carotid vessel wall using variable α and variable TE iMSDE black-blood imaging

Introduction Recent studies on MR imaging of carotid atherosclerosis have shown strong correlations between plaque composition and subsequent cerebrovascular events [1]. The assessment of plaque composition, including lipid core, calcifications, fibrous tissue and hemorrhage is currently performed using multi-contrast weighted imaging, in which each component has a unique combination of hyperan...

High resolution carotid black-blood 3T MR with parallel imaging and dedicated 4-channel surface coils

BACKGROUND Most of the carotid plaque MR studies have been performed using black-blood protocols at 1.5 T without parallel imaging techniques. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a multi-sequence, black-blood MR protocol using parallel imaging and a dedicated 4-channel surface coil for vessel wall imaging of the carotid arteries at 3 T. MATERIALS AND METHODS 14 healthy volunteers and 14...

Nonrigid registration of three-dimensional ultrasound and magnetic resonance images of the carotid arteries.

Atherosclerosis at the carotid bifurcation can result in cerebral emboli, which in turn can block the blood supply to the brain causing ischemic strokes. Noninvasive imaging tools that better characterize arterial wall, and atherosclerotic plaque structure and composition may help to determine the factors which lead to the development of unstable lesions, and identify patients at risk of plaque...
